The notorious 'bogie changing shed' at Brest (Better known to history students as 'Brest Litovsk - as in treaty, thereof.) The Russian Railway Gauge is five feet, whereas in most of the rest of the world it's four feet, eight and a half inches. Since you stay on the same train all the way from Brussels to Moscow, you have to swap the European bogies with the Soviet ones as you cross into Belarus. All this is done while you remain on board. It's a bit like a slow motion pit-stop. Top tip: Make sure you go to the loo before they start.

Two classic trains: on the left, the 'Rossiya' Bi-daily Moscow Vladivostok train, and on the right, the even more romanticallly named 'train number four', weekly Moscow to Beijing train. Both are lit by the setting sun at Perm II at the end of the first day of the trans-Siberian crossing. By now it is Wednesday evening - five days into the trip.
For some reason I can't put my finger on, this is my most viewed photograph. And it's not even close. I've no idea why this should be so, I mean, it's not at all bad, but I've taken better. If anybody can explain the attraction, I'd be keen to know.
