It was waiting departure as train N497 the 21.25 to Beregovo. The train had spent several days stood in the station sidings at Dolina while participants traveled on the nearby 750mm gauge Vygoda Forestry Railways. Dolina is the junction for the 9km freight branch to Vygoda where the vast 750mm gauge forestry network once radiated into the Carpathian Mountains.

These powerful 2 x 3160 kW electric locos were designed primarily for freight work and the Cyrillic letter 'c' indicates it is from the sub class VL80s. The 's' stands for Sistema-mnogikh-edinits (Multiple Operation System).

The train is on the interlaced 1520mm and 1435mm dual gauge line between Batevo and Korolevo on the southern border with Hungary.
Автор фото: Adrian NichollsEast and westbound trains are seen crossing at Gayvoron/Haivoron on the 750mm gauge Rudnytsia to Pidhorodna line. This 188km long east west line was once part of the much larger Southern Feeder Railway in the Soviet era. Since Ukrainian independence the line has withered away to an infrequent service that only runs on certain days of the week.
The train in the background with Tu2-071 has just arrived from Pidhorodna while in the foreground is Tu2-274 with train N498 08.30 Rudnytsia to Pidhorodna formed as a mixed train at the request of the UK Industrial Railway Society. By this date much of the once extensive freight on the line had come to an end and as can be seen here many of the class Tu7 used on the freight workings lay dumped in the station sidings. When this shot was taken only the extreme western end of the line had closed in February 1996 between Rudnytsia and Camenca (37kms) primarily because it crossed the border with Moldova but in doing so ran into the quasi-independent Transdnistria region which had rebels fighting for independence from Moldova. Services were suspended from 01/02/96 and never restarted.

Автор фото: Adrian NichollsTU2-274 a 750 mm gauge Bo-Bo DE built by Kaluzhskii Mashinostroitel'nyi Zavod in Kaluga and belonging to the Ukrainian State Railway Ukrainska Zaliznitza is seen waiting to come off the depot at Gayvoron/Haivoron. The location was once the centre of the largest 750 mm gauge network in the Ukraine known as the Southern Feeder Railway in the Soviet era. By the date of this visit the remaining 188 km long line was served by one through train a day in each direction from Rudnytsia to Pidhorodna. Sadly the following year 2001 saw the eastern end cut back to Holovanivsk.
